Good Health and Wellbeing: An Engineering Perspective

When it comes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, there is a vast network of different disciplines which can affect and greatly increase the chances of achieving the goals set out by the 2030 Agenda.  Although the discipline of Engineering with Energy Systems focuses mainly on SDG 7 ,Universal and Affordable Energy for all, there is a lot of overlap between the SDGs; SDG 7 happens to be directly involved with SDG 3. This is an obvious relationship because without good energy that can easily be accessed there is a massive disadvantage when it comes to wellbeing, correlating to poor health in most cases. This prompts a further analysis of this relationship. Findings show that over six million homes in Africa are living without electricity. This includes places such as hospitals and schools where energy is essential for things such as proper refrigeration of medicines and vaccines and also efficient lighting for students studying in the schools.

This blog post was written by Ricki, a Masters year engineering student. This blog post aims top provide the reader with an insight of the impact of engineering on the achievement of sustainable development goal 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing.

Sustainable Development Goal 3: An engineering perspective

The Poor Peoples Energy Outlook (PPEO, 2019) and The Energy Progress Report (2019) provide insightful information on issues such as these. They provide a comprehensive look at the progress towards global energy targets. The Engineering targets are to provide electricity and clean cooking to almost everyone. This will in turn help to promote Good Health and Wellbeing across the globe, especially in developing countries. The Energy Progress Report (2019) outlines the three key tasks they hope to achieve; Ensuring universal energy access; doubling the energy efficiency, and substantially increasing the share of renewable energy . The Renewable Energy Sector is particularly effective in contributing to SDG3, and those working within the field ultimately have the chance to make a meaningful contribution to the world by providing those in need with an opportunity for more affordable energy, and in turn improving their overall health and wellbeing.
